TvU is developing high temperature fiber optic cladding. These are noble metal claddings that prevent fiber signals from being distorted by surrounding harsh environments. We have primarily worked with sapphire fibers, creating adherent Au and Pt coatings that tolerate 1000°C and 1400°C respectively. These coatings are bonded to the fibers, so they can tolerate higher temperatures than standard metal clad fibers. Read our technical paper on our preliminary work in this area, High Temperature Sapphire Fiber Cladding.
